"Mrs. Shofner talked with students about how writing can heal us. She shared her inspiration for the character of Ruby and how it is not always good for children to be forced to grow up too soon. My students identified with both the idea of healing and the reality of being forced to grow up and take on adult responsibilities. Students have referred back to this repeatedly. One individual student who mentioned it in connection with our work in Revolutionary War book clubs, has been forced to be the responsible adult in her home. Mrs. Shofner acknowledging that she understands that some children do not have the parents or adults they need really spoke to my students. It validated them and helped them see how we can use things for good and writing about us can help us grow beyond them and writing can give us power. I am so excited by how this gave students a way to name something and a healthy way to talk about it. I also believe there was healing for students in hearing Mrs. Shofner acknowledge this.
Students connected with Shofner. All authors became humans to my students. Now they realize that authors are real people. Interacting with Corabel Shofner is something they will remember all of their lives. They are still talking about it. Getting a signed copy of
her book really meant a lot to my students.

"Corabel Shofner is a delight. Our students were entranced, and Corabel’s book is now one of the most popular in our library. After hearing her speak, one student’s mother told me her daughter came home and immediately went to her room. Because she was quiet for such a long time, the mom went to check, and the daughter said, “Don’t bother me, Mom! I’m writing my novel.” Corabel Shofner is just that good.
